CGL is a distributed law firm for senior attorneys with established practices. No billing minimums, transparent economics, and a deep bench of exceptional legal talent.
A bench built at
Big Law gave you infrastructure at the cost of your hours and your autonomy. Solo practice gave you your hours back and left you running everything alone. CGL is built for attorneys who want both: a real firm behind you, and full autonomy over how you practice, your time, and where you live.
CGL offers a stable client base, a funded growth engine, and a back office that was built to help you scale.
Set your own rates. Work where you choose, in or outside the U.S. No hours quota and no rate card — the one requirement is a book of business, and how you build it is up to you.
Splits are clearly defined, with origination and servicing credit standardized in advance — no billing wars, no re-litigating credit. No buy-in, no capital contribution, no fee stack, and no private equity involvement.
Founded by Hannah Genton (Cooley) and Noam Cohen (Goodwin), and with a senior-only bench trained at AmLaw 100 firms. You work directly with the founders and help shape the firm’s growth.
Most firms in this category let you keep more of the book you already have. CGL is built to grow it: the firm funds and staffs its own client-acquisition engine and referral relationships out of the firm’s share of revenue — not yours. A funded, operating commitment, not a slogan.
The same attorney who handles a client’s day-to-day operations also leads the eventual financing, sale, or acquisition. No hand-off, no relationship gap at the moment it matters most.
CGL doesn’t staff matters with associates learning on the job. Clients pay for judgment, not leverage — a model already built for where the market is heading as AI absorbs the work that used to justify a large associate class.
You set your own rates, and you’re not managed against an hours quota. The one requirement is a minimum book of business; how you get there is up to you — raise your rates, originate and service your own work, hand off servicing to a colleague, or supplement it with work the firm routes to you.
CGL has never taken outside capital, and joining requires none from you — no buy-in, no capital contribution, no management-services fee sitting between you and the revenue you generate. Splits are transparent and defined in advance.
Hannah and Noam are still managing the firm — building, hiring, and scaling it. You’ll work directly with them, not a layer of management several steps removed.
At least one annual firm-wide offsite, plus regional in-person gatherings as the firm reaches critical mass in a given market. Outside of that, you live and work where you want, in or outside the U.S.
The short version: 8+ years of experience, a portable and active book of business, and you’re done choosing between structure and freedom.
You keep your clients and the caliber of work. You lose the hours that own your calendar and the hierarchy that dictates your growth trajectory.
You keep the autonomy you worked so hard to obtain, while gaining a bench of senior colleagues to help you think through difficult issues and expand your offering to clients. You’ll be free of the billing and collections, marketing and branding, and the many day-to-day tasks of running a small business yourself.
You keep the business-first instincts. You get to build a book with real firm infrastructure behind you, instead of starting from zero on your own.
If you’d rather spend more time practicing and less on business development, CGL’s split is built for that too — service clients the firm brings in, alongside whatever you originate yourself, and receive credit for both.
