A Story of Distributed Work Featuring CGL’s Jessica Clark

January 8, 2021

Jessica Clark is a UC Berkeley alumni who got her dream job at the Federal Trade Commission in DC after she graduated. She worked on a variety of data security and consumer and financial privacy matters. Six years later, she made the difficult decision to leave her job and move to Canada to support her aging mother-in-law.

Given the limited remote options available to her in the US legal marketplace, Jessica focused on her transition. She pressed pause on her career for about a year and a half, until she opened a Berkeley alumni magazine in her inbox and learned about CGL. Today, Jessica, who’s still based in Canada, is CGL’s privacy and data security expert. These are some of her thoughts about the distributed work model:

The Difference Between Distributed Work and Remote Work

A distributed workforce doesn’t have a headquarters or office space to go to. It’s considered distributed, not remote, because they have nothing to be remote from. CGL is a distributed law firm with a team that works from locations around the world. While we’re registered in California and practice California law, living there isn’t a requirement for job applicants.

Benefits of a Distributed Work Model

Her story shows the value of distributed work for lawyers, but it’s her experience that clients benefit too. This goes to show that it’s a great fit for anyone whose lifestyle doesn’t fit the mold of the traditional practicing lawyer. The distributed work model allows people like Jessica to continue contributing their expertise and bringing value to clients.

In summary, the benefits of a distributed work model are:

  • Easy coordination with clients and colleagues
  • Flexibility and autonomy that allows you to prioritize family while you continue working
  • It’s a more humane way of working and living
  • Human interaction is an essential feature of distributed work that’s achieved via video conferencing
  • Clients benefit too since they don’t need to leave their offices to meet with their attorneys
